Libby Hill 2009

Libby Hill has come a long way in the past year and 2009 promises more for trail users and supporters.  Here are some of the things we hope to do in 2009:

Pay off the Mortgage – We have $40,000 left to raise in 2009 to finalize payment of the Hancock property.  We can see the light at the end of the tunnel and hope to once again focus all our volunteer efforts to trails.

Flatbread Pizza – Libby Hill Night – Later this year we will be a featured non-profit at Flatbread Pizza in Portland.  This is a fun event and provides funds to Libby Hill, watch for details.

O’Natural’s Benefit Night – Coming in 2009, come and eat in the Old Port and help Libby Hill, date pending watch for details.

Benefit Show to Save Libby Hill – Later this winter a very special benefit show will be held to benefit Libby Hill.  Come and be prepared to laugh at our very special comic guest.  Watch for details!

Snowshoe tours – Got new snowshoes?  Check out one of our snowshoe tours between January and March.  Snowshoes are available if you want to take a test drive before you buy!  In February and March look for our very popular full moon snowshoe treks!

Quarterly Newsletter – Beginning this month, we begin publishing our quarterly Libby Hill newsletter.  The newsletter provides trail information, special events, animal sightings, and the latest maps for trail users.  Sign up for your free electronic copy of our newsletter here.

New Trails – Thanks to our acquisition of the Hancock property we now can add some additional trails to our system.  We are looking to create a new ‘gateway’ trail from near the parking area and to add an additional 1.5 miles of snowshoe/hiking/mountain bike trails that will connect directly to the Harold Libbey Trail.  We need some volunteers to help, contact us if you would like to be a true ‘trail blazer’.

Wildlife Viewing Area – The pond by the Middle School has 2 ideal wildlife viewing areas.  We want to add spurs to the Turkey Trot Trail to provide an easy walk for all trail users to see a wide variety of bird and mammal wildlife.

Birds of Libby Hill Walk June 2009 – Back by popular demand, Derrick Lovitch from the Wildbird Center will take avid bird watchers out to find 40-50 bird species on Libby Hill in 3 fun hours!

Bird Watchers Guide to Libby Hill - coming spring of 2009, an new guide to help birders find the best spots to find birds on Libby Hill.

Libby Hill 10th Anniversary 10K Run – We are looking to host a major running event at Libby Hill between August and October of 2009.  This event will mark our 10th anniversary and put us on the runner circuit as runners discover how special our trails are for running!

Permanent Signage on Route 26 - a permanent sign on Route 26 to replace our temporary 'Save Libby Hill' sign.

James Libby Homestead Project – The Dolloff family, descendants of James Libby, would like to place a memorial at the Libby farmstead foundation.  We are looking to clear brush and place a bench and sign describing the history of the farm.  Volunteers will be needed to help clean up and plan the memorial.

Invasive Barberry Removal Project – The Turkey Trot trail has over 100 invasive barberry plants that need to be removed.  We are looking for volunteers to help stem this environmental threat.

New Guides for Snowshoeing, Walking and Hiking – The Libby Hill Trail Guide and Snowshoe guide will be updated to help users find all the highlights of the Hill.

Harold Libbey Bridge Project – Several wet spots require some small bridges to assist users during the wet season.  We will need help assembling the bridges, call us if you can help.

Trail Swat Team – A few times a year, storms cause lots of debris to drop on the ski trails.  We need a pool of people who might be able to volunteer a couple of hours a few times a year. You don’t need to attend every event just be on our ‘call’ pool and help out if it fits your schedule.

Libby Family Reunion – The national Libby family reunion is considering a Libby Hill tour in September.

Grow the Friends of Libby Hill – The Friends of Libby Hill help coordinate trail volunteers and promote Libby Hill.  We need more folks to join us and donate whatever time works best for their schedule.  We also want to match you with the type of activity that you enjoy most.  Consider attending our next meeting on January 26th. to see what the ‘friends’ are all about.
