About Libby Hill Forest Trails

Promoting community through open space recreation and conservation.

Libby Hill Forest consists of over eleven miles of multipurpose recreational trails in Gray, Maine.  The trail system spans properties owned by the Town of Gray, SAD 15, Royal River Conservation Trust (RRCT) and the Gray Community Endowment (GCE). These trails are located adjacent to the Gray-New Gloucester Middle and High Schools.

The history of the project has spanned over 20 years and was made possible by the demanding work of hundreds of volunteers.  The trails officially opened in February of 2001. In 2008 the Land for Maine’s Future program awarded funding to save a critical parcel adjoining the school property.

These trails span four properties owned by the Town of Gray, SAD 15, Royal River Conservation Trust (RRCT) and the Gray Community Endowment. They are overseen by the Gray Parks and Recreation and Facility Departments and the Gray Community Endowment.

Several videos related to Libby Hill are available on YouTube. This includes mountain bike tours, a drone aerial view, a mountain bike tour of the Outback and ‘The Movie’ (also see below).

How it Began

In 2008 SMCC students led by Corey Rich undertook a video production project to produce a video telling the story of the creation of Libby Hill Trails.  Since then, we have raised funds to save the trails, but the movie still provides a nice introduction to the trails and the history of how the trails were created.

Richard Libbey – Donated 45 acres to Libby Hill Forest Trails

Warm weather has deteriorated the ski trails. We need a foot or more of snow to get the ski trails groomed.
